Research Interests
The mammalian olfactory system has the remarkable ability to discriminate thousands of odorants. As the primary neuronal elements in the olfactory system, olfactory sensory neurons are responsible for detecting odor molecules and subsequently sending signals to the brain. These neurons selectively express one or a few olfactory receptor genes from a repertoire of ~1000, the largest gene family in the mammalian genome. We are interested in the functional and molecular organization of the olfactory system and the mechanisms underlying olfactory coding and processing. Our approach combines techniques from different disciplines including optical imaging, patch clamp recording, immunohistochemistry, molecular cloning, in situ hybridization and Affymetrix genechip.
